Razorback (1984) opening scene Analysis

My analysis of Razorback using M.E.L.C.S:
M-Mise en scene- For analysisng Mise en scene we use C.L.A.M.P.S
  •  C-Costume- The old man was wearing a typical american 'hillbilly' outfit, this represents his status as an all american man. The baby is wearing a baby outfit that makes it look cute what a baby should look like.
  • L-Lighting- Is in M.E.L.C.S.
  • A-Actors- The actors used in this clip are an old man and a baby these represent vulnerability so we can tell by this that there could be something bad about to happen.
  • M-Make-up- The make up used in the scene is quite natural to make the man look older so it makes him look more vulnerable and the baby was made to look cuten so it to was vulnerable.
  • P-Props- The props used in the scene were teh gun which was held by the man which is stereotypical that a man holds the gun, that was it apart from the childs toy.
  • S-Setting- The clip is shot in an American desert in a stereotypical American farmhouse and the weather is bad to signify that there will be something bad happening and when the man goes out side the weather changes for the bad.
E-Editing- There is only jumpo shots used in this clip to set the setting at the beginning and to create suspension when teh monster attacks.

L-Lighting- The low key lighting is used outside the house because it creates tention to the audience so that the audience gets suspention. In the house the lighting is high key to show the love between the son/grandson and the old man.

C-Camera- The use of establishing shots help to set the scene so that the audience knows where the film is set, zooms to show certain objects, close ups of the mans love for the child when he is holding him and when he has lost him, also we see his curiosity when the noise happens outside when he puts the child down to sleep. All this helps to create tention and the audience knows where it is set.

S-Sound- There are two different types of sound used in a clip from a film diagetic and non-diagetic:
  •   Diagetic- In the scene there is the actors talking shows how much the man loves the boy, the helicopter and the wind turbine are not very significant in this clip. The monster making its sound is also diagetic and the gun cocking is also.
  • Non-Diagetic- eiry music sets the mood of the scene so that the audience has suspense this music is only on when the man hears the monster from outside.
Convensions of a good film opening:
  • Introduction to the setting of the film.
  • The mood and tone is set for the film.
  • The main character is introduced in the scene.
  • The audience is drawn in.
Enigma's created.
  • What is the monster?
  • Why did it attack?
  • Who is the man?
  • Where is the baby?
  • Why that particular house of interest to the monster?
