Filming log
On the 14/12/11 we did all the cellar shots this included the dead body shots, the close up on the victim and the man walking down the stairs. Also we did the dragging of the victim so that the audience knew she had been knocked out and taken away.

Filming so far
On the 06.12.2011 we filmed the establishing shot of the house. Unfortunately we are going to have to do that shot again due to a continuity error.
On the 12.12.2011 we filmed the pictures on the floor and got about 5 minutes of film to play with to make it look better when it came to editing.
On the 13.12.2011 we filmed the woman baking and the door knocking, the baking was instead of the cup of tea, the woman answer the door and the the close ups of the man's face and the woman's face.
This is a still of our editing process the man is knocking on the woman' s door.
This is a still of the man smiling at the woman right before he frowns and knocks her out.
This is a still of the images on the floor, the woman's face is scratched out and the shadow creates suspense.

Good and bad points to filming
We have been filming these lest 2 weeks and there have been some good and bad points to our filming.
Good points:
We have had a continuity error with the lighting we had a problem with the establishing shot of the house, when the camera goes from the house to the man walking to the door the lighting gets darker therefore we need to revisit that shot and do it again to make it look better for the audience.
Also we need to get more shots of Sophie baking in the kitchen.
Good points:
- We have got the first minute of our 2 minutes done from filming.
- We are able to do filming when one of use is ill.
- We are getting a lot done on the nights we do film.
- We have been working well as a team.
Bad points:
- We have had a problem with the filming of the woman being dragged away some of it is missing and it skips the important parts.
- The weather is changing and it is about to snow so we hopefully will have our external shots done.
- We have been looking at the cellar and we need light so we have been given a lamp but, we needed an extension cable and now we have one tonight we will be trying to get that done.

Danielle Burns

We have just found out that Danielle Burns will be leaving school therefore she will no longer be in our group. This is unfortunate because she is a valid member of our group and does keep up to date with her work. She will be missed and we have wished her all the best in whatever she does.

Micro and macro elements
The micro elements in our production all help to add up to to the macro for example the micro elements ie lighting and the sound all help to create suspense a macro element. All the micro elements help in our production to create the feeling of a horror film. So by this I can tell that all the micro elements are important in our production. So in our production we have low key lighting, eerie music and distorted sounds to create the tension build up in the production.
Shot list
We have listed all the shot types we will need in order to complete our media video. This will help us to achieve our production faster.

Preliminary task
Our preliminary task consisted of filming someone walking down a corridor and opening the door and saying a few lines of dialogue:
During the preliminary task we did an evaluation on what we had done:
The evaluation
Write about the preliminary task. what were you asked to do? How did you find each stage of the process?
- Continuity task, involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room, sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom he/she then exchanges a couple lines of dialogue. This task should of demonstrated match on action / shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule.
- I had to do editing and it went well I thought it was good fun and learned a lot about adobe premier pro.
Write 3 things you learned during the preliminary task:
- Continuity is vital in a shot.
- Close ups help depict the characters emotion.
- How to edit film together.
List 3 things that went well:
- The continuity.
- Shot reverse shot.
- The editing process.
List 3 things you think you could have improved:
- The walking and the opening of the door.
- The facial expressions and the dialogue.
- Could have used more effects such as wipes.
Has the preliminary task given you any ideas for your 2 minute film opening? If so, what?
- The shot reverse shot I think we should use.
- The editing process will be used for example adobe premier pro.
We have decided to look at this before we start to film because it helps us with the match on action, 180 degree rule and the shot reverse shot. So that we do it all right when it comes to our own production.
Props and costumes
The props and costumes we have decided to use are:
Props:
Costumes:
Props:
- A crow bar to make the audience know the weapon straight off instead of some weapon that the audience will not recognise.
- Kettle and tea equipment to show that the young woman is a normal person and the sound of the kettle creates suspense.
- We are using photos in the beginning 30 seconds to create suspense and enigma's. This will help use establish the opening characters also. We are not using these photos but these are an example of how we will be using the photos.
Costumes:
- The killer is wearing dark clothes this is a connotation that the man is going to do something wrong, he is identified within the first 10 seconds of action.
- The woman is wearing normal everyday clothes to make her look innocent. The clothes are a connotation that she is not bad so the good and bad in the film is already been established.
Shooting Schedule

Storyboard
Our storyboard for the 2 minute film opening:
We have chosen an aerial shot because the pictures will all be scattered on the floor and the best way to show them all is by this shot, we have chosen to have narrating over the pictures.
We choose a close up on the pictures to show that we have gone closer to the photos, to show that the woman's face is scratched out. The sound is narrating over the titles.
The shot is a close up because it shows the emotion in the man's face and the closeness between the two, the sound is narrating to show the closeness also between the two people.
The camera then fades out to a point of view shot on the house that the woman lives in. The music will be non diagetic and will change from narrating to eerie music, to show the mood change.
The camera movement in the clip will be a mid shot because it shows her making a cup of tea and then it shows a close up of the kettle to get the audience ready for the next close up. The sound will be edited in for the kettle and the music will be eerie music.
The man knocks on the door it will be a close up on his hand knocking to emphasise it. the music will be eerie also.
The camera will then go to a wide angle shot, to show that the woman has opened the door to the house. the sound will then stay eerie slightly to show the suspense.
The camera will then go to a close up of the woman's mouth smiling and then cut to his mouth and his smile will turn to a frown. The music will cut of at this point to create suspense.
The camera will go to a low angle on the woman falling with blood on her face, the sound will kick in as she falls in front of the camera.
The camera will then show the woman waking up after being knocked out, this will be a point of view shot, and the music will be muffled and the breathing will be heavy.
The woman face will be shown a close up and she looks to her left and see's dead people then as she looks the camera goes to another point of view shot. The sound will then get louder and the woman will start to move.
The camera will then show the woman crawling into the corner and the music will still be eerie and it will show the fear on the woman's face. Then the camera moves around and the door opens and we hear the sound of it opening and then it cuts to black.
We did have two more but we have decided to remove those for effect, here they are:
The man walks in it shows a long shot and the music is eerie.
Then she screams and the man walks down the stairs and the woman says why are you doing this to me.

Synopsis
The film opens with a man (Dave Nickles) taking a woman and after the title it goes back in time to show why the man is doing this to the woman he has found. Dave walks into his apartment one night to find his girlfriend (Lily Fairfield) cheating on him with what he thought was a good friend. So he plans revenge on the two of them. Whilst shopping at the local supermarket he sees a woman whom resembles the woman he once loved, Lily. He starts talking to her and arranges a ren de vous with her. So they meet and become close friends but she is letting herself in for more than she can handle. Dave sees a few girls that remind him of the woman he was once heart taken for and they too cant handle whats lurking around the corner. Towards the end there is the woman locked up in a stingy room and she has two limp dead bodies near her. Dave walks in and shuts her up. Soon after we see him walking into another room and lily is locked away within with the good friend and new lover, Ben. As Dave enters to the room holding Lily and Ben captive, Lily stabs Dave in the lungs and leaves the glass in the lung pulsing. Whilst having words with the vulnerable Dave, Lily escapes. She manages to do this as Ben sacrificed himself by allowing Lily to pull the rope tight on him and crush his lungs and loosen the rope to free herself. A true soulmate. s she runs off she says a few lastwords and pulls the glass from the lungs causing lung failure and a gross scene of blood.
BBFC
The BBFC are the 'British board of film clasification' who are an independant, non- governmental body funded through the fees it charges to those who submit films and video through clasification.
What do the BBFC take ito consideration?
Some examples that the BBFC have banned in the uk because they are of a worse standard of 18.
What do the BBFC take ito consideration?
- Discrimination
- Drugs
- Horror
- Imitable behaviour
- Language
- Nudity
- Sex
- Theme
- Violence
Key to all decisions is the context these things are presented in. So graphic violence which is glamorised will be classified much stricter than fairly light violence which is presented in a comical or negative manner.
- Human centipeed 2 the full sequence.
- Grotesc because it had to much level of sexual tortue.
This is an example of the 18 symbol the BBFC would have on the film ratings.

Our film's rating
The reasons that our film is an 18 are as follows:
- The film will endorse bad behaviour this is to much to be a 15.
- There is to much sadistic behaviour it is twisted therefore the film cannot be a 15 also.
- There is suffocating glamorised and in the 15 rating nothing is able to be glamorised.
- There is to much nudity in the film when Dave walks in on Steve and lilly having sexual intercourse it is to graphic.
- The film is to gory and there is to much pain and gore for it to be a 15.

The blurb
Our blurb for our film idea:
Join Dave Nickles through his heart weakening story. As the woman he once loved tips him over the edge. He cannot cope with the sight of his past love and certainly, not anyone who resembles her. So he goes to desperate measures to make sure 'they' are gone...

Popular films by their genre's

As the table shows the film by quarter to date shows that the best selling film is paranormal activity 3 a horror.
Also the index by quarter the best selling film is paranormal 3 so the trend is that the best selling film this year so far is horror, so I think that horror is a good genre to be doing, Because the film at the top this quarter so far is a horror therefore there is a big market for it.

Target audience
After analysing the data on film audiences from the UK film council, it is clear that there is a potentially huge market for me to target. Almost one third of cinema goers (32%- picture 1, page. 105). Then there was 15% of cinema goers saying it was there favourite genre (picture2, page. 116).
Looking at the demographic data (page. 106), it appears that I should be mainly aiming my product at females below the age of 35, where 44% of the public enjoy watching horror films. One third of males for over 35 and under 35 enjoy watching them to, whereas females over 35, only 22% enjoy watching them. So our main audiences is females under 35 and males over the age of 16. These are some examples from the UK film council website of target audiences.

Conventions of the horror genre
When analysing the conventions we use the following abriviation C.M.I.N.T.S.
Characters
We analyse mise en scene with C.L.A.M.P.S.
Costumes

As you can see it has the eerie music, the low key lighting, an attractive young victim and the setting at a beach. This clip addresses alot of the horror conventions as you can see there and this would be the case in alot of horror films.
Characters
- There is always a main character that is portrayed to be the killer/ monster etc, that often results as the survivor in the film.
- The killer/ monster etc, often has a trademark characteristic in the way he/ she/ it kills, for example, the people he kills or the weapon he/ she/ it uses.
- The good person always survives and/ or defeat the bad guy/ monster etc.
We analyse mise en scene with C.L.A.M.P.S.
Costumes
- There is usually a mask. Which is usually a trademark to that particular killer this is usually used when there is more than film for example: Jason x, Texas chainsaw masacre. Sometimes the clothes used in the film are the trademark of that killer, also when there is more than one film perhaps for example: Freddie from nightmare on elm street wheres the red stripy jumper in the Freddie films. This creates familiarity to the killer for the audience so that after the first film the audience knows what the trademark clothes are so they know it is that killer this makes it so that the opening of the film doesnt have to introduce that actor again.

Lighting
- Low key lighting in horror films is generally used when the killer/ monster is stricking because it creates tention to the audience. The setting and lighting tie in together importantly because when someone is killed or taken then the setting and lighting must go well together for example: if a woman were to be killed in a graveyard in broad daylight it wouldnt have as much affect than if it was at night.
Actors
- The actors usually used in horror films is attractive young adults for the victims usually. The old sometimes scard or that has dissabilties are usually the killer/ monster this ties in with the costumes because the killer wears a mask to hide these dissabilities. The audience of these horror films will automatically look at these conventions and within 2 minutes will know what genre it is from the way the actor is dressed and how he/ she is made up.
Make up
- The make up put on the victims is well made up because it makes them look attractive and vulnerable whereas the killer is usually not good looking and has made up scars made from make up. This is one of the reasons why the killer/ monster wears the mask, another reason why the killer/ monster wears a mask is to hide the identity of them selves. The audience see's the make up and then assumes that it is a horror all the blood used is make up also this helps to see that it is a horror.
Setting
- Horrors are generally set at night when the action happens but it can be set in the day but it wouldnt create the same effect.
- The setting of the film sets the mood and the tone of the film so that the audience see these places and know that it is a horror.
- Some examples of places horror films are set are: Old mines, Derelict houses, Fields, A house in a hormal neighbourhood, Sorority houses, University grounds, Schools, Old farm houses, Butchers, Lakes, The country side, A haunted house or a forest.
Iconography
- There is a specific pattern within horror movies, as they are set up to address the implied viewer. Connotation of the horror genre shows the viewer who or what is good or bad.
- Iconography can also be symbolic to symbols which recur throughout all horror films for example: A haunted house, A screaming victim, The phallic murder weapon, Good vs evil, Darkened places where the killer/ murderer is and blood and body parts.
Narrative
- Horror is based upon conflict and dillemmas the main character goes through. From the main set of characters, several character types are chosen, the heroine or hero, the evil killer/ monster and the supporting characters. Horror addresses the viewer with the expectation that the viewer will identify the hero.
Theme
- Horrors main theme is cause of conflict between the two characters in the film. There are a few general themes in horror such as: Slasher, Vampire, Zombie, Demonic possesion, Alien mind control, Evil children, Cannibalism, Werewolves, Animals attacking humans, Good vs evil.
- The villan is a representation of persons fears from that particular era that the movie was made, for example: In western horror films, the monsters are consistent with the representation of sexuality, whereas in European horror films the monster is consistent with cultural myths.
Sound
- Diagetic- Means that the actor hears the sound during filming it is not edited in.
- Sound is used to create tention for the audience, screaming and tools being sharpened are examples of these more examples are: Twigs breaking and the rustling of the trees by wind or by someone like the killer it makes the audience panic. When it is used though th eaudience knows it is coming therefor is ready for it but still is jumpy.
- Non- Diagetic- Means that the actor does not hear it during filming it is edited in during the production stages.
- Music in horror films help create tention, there is usually an audio sequence in horror films that most people recognise. A long eerie musical build up of strings and horns as the victim, for example approaches a closed door then this is followed by a violant orchestral hit as the victim opens the door to encounter whatever is hidden behind it.
All of these conventions of the horror genre work together without one of them all the others will not work below is a clip of a good horror film that meets alot of the conventions in a horror film:
As you can see it has the eerie music, the low key lighting, an attractive young victim and the setting at a beach. This clip addresses alot of the horror conventions as you can see there and this would be the case in alot of horror films.

Planning, key questions
1. Is it practical?
- Our idea is practical because it is achieveable because my group and i know we can do it. Our idea works well because the group and I have got some key concepts to work with for our film opening. We get on well we can speak our mind to each other and we are well organised.
- The idea we have chosen works with the strenghts of the group because my favourate genre of film is horror and the Sophie and Danielle like horrors to so i think we have chosen a great genre as we all know alot of genre conventions. The group is organised especially Danielle she works well at these sort of ideas, whereas Sophie is very creative and came up with a lot of the ideas for the film opening and I am good at the planning and all the theory work involved in the planning section. Because we are friends communication won't be a problem during this production.
- I think that the horror genre is a good film to do because it shows of the camera shots and the camera angles that we can do in the 2 minutes because there is a variety of shots taht can be used in the scene. It will allow use to show of our skills with the camera such as match on action, 180 degree rule and the basic camera shots such as close ups, long shots and establishing shots.
- The ideas that my group and i have had are possible to do in the 2 minutes because we dont want to do much, and 2 minutes is alot of camera time after editing. We have only got two locations we have chosen for our film opening so we hope to get the filming done in maybe two weeks, Because we only have about 6 to 7 weeks on the practical for example the filming and the editing.
- We can gain access to Sophie's house when the killer knocks on her door and knocks her out. Also we have been granted access to the old RAF buildings in Newtoft.
- We have got some construction sight lights to use on scene when the woman is locked away.
- We have only got a little dialogue and it works with the location we have chosen. We are not using much dialogue because we want to create suspense for the audience.
- We have chosen some very reliable actors to play the parts of the dead bodies and the woman that is taken hostage and the killer so we shouldnt have a problem with actors in the scene. The actors we have chosen are good because they are all of high quality because we have a range of students from media studies and drama studies this helps because they can help if there is a technical problem and we cannot fix it and the drama students will be good at the acting in the film opening.
Final choice
Our final choice of film opening we will be doing is pitch 1 which we are thinking of calling it love hurts or heart of stone, this choice is a horror and the sub genre is a psychological horror. We have chosen this because we feel that we got the best feedback on this pitch and when we were thinking of ideas this one appealed to use the most. This choice of film is very good because we feel that the audience will like it the most and the film opening will be outstanding with the ideas that we have got together.

Pitch feedback
The improvements below are from the feedback we got in class.
Pitch 1 improvements:
The unique selling point of this idea is that it is not like every other film I have seen it is different to other horrors.
Enigma's created:
Sound:
Pitch 2 improvements:
Enigma's created:
Sound:
Pitch 1 improvements:
The unique selling point of this idea is that it is not like every other film I have seen it is different to other horrors.
Enigma's created:
- Why is the killer doing this?
- Why is the womans face scrathed out?
- Why are they all wearing the same dress?
Sound:
- Diagetic- Actors talking (screaming), The wind and the trees this is called ambient sound.
- Non-Diagetic- Eeiry music.
- The lighting will be low key when the killer visits the woman at her house so we will hope to set that during sunset to create suspense. Then in the room when the woman is scared and being held hostage the lighting is very low key to show that there is something wrong and the dead bodies are seen as a very bad thing.
- Close ups to show the emotion of the woman and to show the tention between the killer and the woman.
- Maybe an establishing shot to set the scene but dont know where that would fit in.
- Medium close ups will be used to show the emotion closer up in the face of the actor when there is a tense moment.
- Point of view shot to show the dead bodies that the person is looking at.
- The focus shot will be used so that all the planes are seen by the audience.
- High angle on the hostage to show that she is weak and in no powerful situation.
- Low angle to show that the killer is the most powerful in the shot and the frame.
- An arc shot to show the woman panicking and lost in the dark room so the camera will arc around her to show this.
Pitch 2 improvements:
Enigma's created:
- Why is the man tied up and got a saw going towards him?
- What has happened for this to happen to the man?
Sound:
- Diagetic: The saw in the last 20 seconds and the actor shouting for help.
- Non-diagetic- All it is, is the music when the man is screaming and the music when the puictures come on screen for the first part.
- When the man is tied up it is low key lighting. And when the pictures come up when it is the husband and wife it is high key lighting and when it is the woman getting killed it is low key lighting.
- Close ups to show the mans emotions and the worry in his face.
- Establishing shot to show the scene and the set the mood of the film.
- Point of view shot to show the saw.
- High angle shot used on the man to show that he is the weaker man in the scene.

The pitch's
During our pitch we got mixed opinions of the two pitch's
Watch our pitch and feedback below:
Pitch 1
- They thought that the horror idea in the first pitch was unique and was different to any other they had seen.
- The enigma's that were created were also good they said.
- The opening i think got a good overeall positive view by the group and that helped our group decide which one were going to do.
Pitch 2
- They said it was to like other films they had seen.
- That the two pitches were the same and to close to one another so that they can not be separate films.
- The pitch was looked at at a different angle because it reminded the group of other films that are out there.
The conclusion
Overall the two were considered to be to similar to be different pitches.
Pitch 1 was the best according to the group so I think we will be going with that one which is good because we wanted to do that one overall.

Razorback (1984) opening scene Analysis
My analysis of Razorback using M.E.L.C.S:
M-Mise en scene- For analysisng Mise en scene we use C.L.A.M.P.S
- C-Costume- The old man was wearing a typical american 'hillbilly' outfit, this represents his status as an all american man. The baby is wearing a baby outfit that makes it look cute what a baby should look like.
- L-Lighting- Is in M.E.L.C.S.
- A-Actors- The actors used in this clip are an old man and a baby these represent vulnerability so we can tell by this that there could be something bad about to happen.
- M-Make-up- The make up used in the scene is quite natural to make the man look older so it makes him look more vulnerable and the baby was made to look cuten so it to was vulnerable.
- P-Props- The props used in the scene were teh gun which was held by the man which is stereotypical that a man holds the gun, that was it apart from the childs toy.
- S-Setting- The clip is shot in an American desert in a stereotypical American farmhouse and the weather is bad to signify that there will be something bad happening and when the man goes out side the weather changes for the bad.
L-Lighting- The low key lighting is used outside the house because it creates tention to the audience so that the audience gets suspention. In the house the lighting is high key to show the love between the son/grandson and the old man.
C-Camera- The use of establishing shots help to set the scene so that the audience knows where the film is set, zooms to show certain objects, close ups of the mans love for the child when he is holding him and when he has lost him, also we see his curiosity when the noise happens outside when he puts the child down to sleep. All this helps to create tention and the audience knows where it is set.
S-Sound- There are two different types of sound used in a clip from a film diagetic and non-diagetic:
- Diagetic- In the scene there is the actors talking shows how much the man loves the boy, the helicopter and the wind turbine are not very significant in this clip. The monster making its sound is also diagetic and the gun cocking is also.
- Non-Diagetic- eiry music sets the mood of the scene so that the audience has suspense this music is only on when the man hears the monster from outside.
- Introduction to the setting of the film.
- The mood and tone is set for the film.
- The main character is introduced in the scene.
- The audience is drawn in.
- What is the monster?
- Why did it attack?
- Who is the man?
- Where is the baby?
- Why that particular house of interest to the monster?
Dead men by other AS students in De Aston
My analysis of this film opening is as follows:
M.E.L.C.S
M-Mise en scene
C-Costume- The man being chased by the killer was wearing everyday normal clothes to show that he is not cery significant. The killer was wearing a hoodie to represent that he was dangerous. The news reporter was wearing a nice shirt and tie to represent that he was in a well payed job.
L- Lighting- In M.E.L.C.S.
A-Actors- The man who was being chased was scared to show that he was worried. The man that was chasing the victim was serious when we saw a little part of his face. The news reporter was serios to show his job. This all shows the seriousness of the scene.
M-Make up- The make up in the scene is quite normal apart from the victim and the killer, the victim's face was quite pale to emphasise that he was scared and the killer's face was dark to show that he was serious and damgerous.
P-Props- The props used in the scene are the gun which is held by a man which is a stereotype that a gun should be held by a man when we think of a gun we think of men using it. The other props was the t.v which created an Enigma.
S-Setting- The setting of this scene was set in the woods and in a mans house whilsthe watched t.v.
E-Editing- In the scene there were some jump shots this creates a fast tempo to the scene and keeps the suspense running. There were also dissolve cuts when the credits came onto the screen.
L-Lighting- The lighting used in the woods was high key lighting which is not a great choice for a horror film but it went ok for the scene shot. In the man's house the lighting was low key because it was a dimmer dullar mood.
C-Camera- The camera shots used in the scene were, shot reverse shot when the man was watching tv to show that someone was watching the tele, there was also some zooms to show that there was someone running from someone in the woods. The murderer had a low angle camera on him to show power and that he was in control, The victim had a high angle camera on him to show that he was weak and couldnt do anything. Lastly there was a hand held shot following the man being chased around the corner in the woods.
S-Sound- There are two types of sound in the clip diagetic and non- diagetic.
Diagetic- In the scene the diagetic soung used is the gun when it goes of to show that the man was killed. The leaves and the trees in the wind when the people are running. The T.V when the man is watching it to show what the film would be about.
Non-diagetic- The music in the clip does not really fit the horror genre it fits the mafia of the action genre.
Likes- I like the way the camera has been used in the clip to create power to the killer.
Dislikes- I didnt like the way the camera was moved it was jolty.
- I didnt like the props the gun you could tell was fake.
- I didnt like the lighting in the clip because it didnt fit the horror genre convensions.
Conventions- Good conventions of a film opening that the film opening created

An opening scene of a horror film
This is one of the many horror opening scenes that my group and I have looked at, we have been looking at the sub genres in the genre of horror. There are a few sub genres i.e: psychological horror, survival horror, found footage horror, slasher horror, vampire horror, thriller and ghost. We have been looking at alot film openings around these sub genres but we are not sure about the type of horror to do we are drawn between a psychological horror and a thriller.

The Hangover - opening sequence.
The opening scene in the hangover has alot of convensions of a good movie opening, the first 2 minutes and 10 seconds. I will be analysing the movie opening using M.E.L.C.S.
M-mise on scene
- Analysing mise en scene with C.L.A.M.P.S will help.
- C- Costume- There is alot of wedding people setrting up they are all wearing the same costumes symbolising that they are working and helping sort out the wedding. The bride to be is wearing a white dressing gown this shows us that she is being either pampered because of the woman stood next to her sorting out her hair in the mirror. This tells us that she is the woman being married. The older woman is wearing casual clothes but not so casual that she doesnt stand out. The man sat on the sofa reading the magazine is wearing shorts and quite casual clothes for his daughter's big day. Then you have the man stood in the desert on the phone to the bride to be is wearing a tatty shirt and looks rough so we assume that the the other people in the shot next to the car are very simular to how he looks because we dont see them in the opening scene.
- L- Lighting- Included in M.E.L.C.S.
- A- Actors- The actors in the opening scene seem quite disstressed apart from the wedding workers in the scene they seem quite chilled and ready to work. Whereas the bride to be seems distressed when we first see her we see a beautifulk woman then we see her talking to her mother and father and is worried about where her fiance is after the bacholour party. The father of the woman is also chilled as he makes a joke about where and why they are missing, 'There probably on a heater, and you never walk away from a table when your on a heater'. By this we see that the film is going to be humorous. The men at the car are not chilled because we find out they have lost the fiance on the bacholour party in LA this means that the film is going to be a funny, and fast paced film. The actor that plays Phil is also a conotation of a funny actor because people associate him with funny films.
- M- Make up- There is not alot of make up in the first scene apart from the woman getting married she has a little make up on to show her natural beauty and phil when he is on the end of the phone call to tracy (bride to be) he has make up on to highlight the blood on his face also the blood and brusing and the dirty look is make up.
- P- Props- The is alot of props in the first scene the florist van and the flowers symbolising that it is a speical day this is backed up by the fact that there is a wedding cake and a dress and the wedding set-up. Also there is the car in the desert which symbolises loss when someone is lost or missing.
- S- Setting- the main setting of the first scene is the wedding venue, the chairs and alter and the preparation room where the bride to be is being pampered also there is the desert.
- There is alot of dissolve shots in the pening scene to show that the images of the wedding set up are emphasised. There is a fade into the wedding cake.
- The lighting in the first scene is mostly high key to set the mood of the scene so that the movie will be funny, also it shows that there is a speical occasion ready to happen.
- In the opening scene there is alot of different camera shots for example there are mid establishing shots to show the wedding venue and set the scene. There are close ups on the wedding props for example: the cake, the dress and the chairs.
- There are two types of sound starting of Non Diagetic sound- The music is kind of chilled and not knowing what will happen alos the voicemail when we see the wedding venue thay emphasise the voicemail so that the viewer knows that there is no answer. The diagetic sound we hear is the actors talking.
- We are introduced to the main characters.
- There are credits so that we know that there are good actors and we know and find out the producers names.
- It sets the tone and the mood of the film.
- The setting is made clear.
- It creates enigma's.
- Where is doug?
- What has happened?
- What did they do the night before?
Also check out my power point on the opening scene of hangover:
Resident Evil: Afterlife Clip - Opening Scene
I will be using M.E.L.C.S to analyse the opening scene from resident evil afterlife.
M-Mise en scene
- For analysing mise on scene i will be using C.L.A.M.P.S
- C- Costume- The costumes used in the opening scene to make the people in the scene look like thay are going to work the men in suits and the women in buissness suits and dresses. This creates a buissness type environment quite serious and the woman stood still in the middle of the shot is wearing casual clothes to make her stand out from the group and this creates use to wonder why is she wearing this?. All the people in the scene have umbrella's apart from the woman in the middle of the shot who has no umbrella and it is raining already this sets the scene that there is something wrong.
- L- Lighting- is included in M.E.L.C.S.
- A- Actors- The actors used in the scene are casual and in is set in either China or Japan because all the people are from that type of area this creates the viewer to wonder what is happening because it starts there and then it spreads to the UK further on in the film.
- M- Make up- The make- up used in the scene is natural because it creates a sense of reality and the woman that has no umbrella is pale the make-up used would have made her look pale because she is different as we find out at the end of teh scene.
- P- Props- There are only umbrella's used as props in the first scene because it is raining which creates a dark and kind of suspense to the viewer.
- S- Setting- The setting of the scene is a busy path where there are people walking to work.
- There is little editing in the opening scene of this. All there are, is dissolves when the dredits come and go.
- The lighting in the opening scene is mainly low key lighting, this creates tension and it tells the viewer that the film will be scary and dark.
- There are alot of close ups used in the opening scene to show you what the people are wearing and to show what the girl is wearing and also her emotions and facial expressions. There is a mid close up to show the girl and how she is standing. There is an establishing shot and a zoom at the end to show the the infection is spreading and to show you where it was set.
- There are two types of sound Diagetic and non diageticto start with the diagetic sound there was the rain falling and the woman's attack on the man. The non diagetic sound in this scene was the music which created suspense and this creates tension to the viewer.
- There are credits to tell us that who the producer is and who will be staring in the film.
- It leaves us wondering what will happen.
- It sets the scene and the mood of the scene.
- What has just happened?
- How has it happened?
- Why is it spreading?
- What will happen next?
What is an enigma?
An enigma is a question that is not answered in a text or clip that draws the audience into a text to find out the answer to the enigma created.
